But when realizing that developing a new spinach variety takes about five years, we always need to think far ahead as a breeding company. So, that’s exactly what we do.
If you know about spinach, you know about downy mildew. Since the start of our spinach breeding program, 35 years ago, we successfully started breeding for resistance against this disease. Today, we’re proud market leader in both baby spinach and bunching varieties. We make sure to stay ahead of the latest types and isolates of downy mildew and white rust. And because our varieties are resilient to local physios, they’re perfect for organic cultivation. This allows us to offer growers a wide range of varieties that have the maximum resistance available in the market today.
At KWS, we believe in the power of seeing results firsthand. That’s why we conduct intensive trials under different conditions and regularly visit our customers to understand their needs. This hands-on approach, combined with cutting-edge science and in-depth know-how has solidified our leadership in fresh spinach. With access to advanced technologies and extensive know-how, we continuously push the boundaries of what’s possible in spinach resistance. In addition, our extensive trial program teaches us how we can optimally slot our varieties into production schedules, ensuring maximum yields while keeping the cost per pound low.
